New Tudor Pelagos 39: what you need to know

Tudor is on a roll. After a stunning year of new editions, Tudor is back with an essential update to an iconic watch. Introducing the Pelagos 39.

Tudor’s Pelagos family has been around since the early 1950’s. It was designed to be the simple yet powerful dive watch of record for Tudor.

That makes any change to the design – no matter how subtle – a big deal.

Announced at 2022 Geneva Watch Days, the new Pelagos 39 is a sight to behold, and worthy of the Pelagos name.

We’ve loved everything this year from the Black Bay Pro, right through to the new Ranger. A new Pelagos is super-welcome.

What is it?

It’s the first time the Pelagos dive watch has been issued in a 39mm case size. It joins a family of thinner and more wearable watches from Tudor in the last 12 months.

The new Pelagos 39 is an automatic watch that resizes a typically bigger case into something that’s more wearable everyday.

Tudor says that the Pelagos 39 is a more compact and versatile divers’ watch, complete with “a touch of elegance”. It’s separated from the other Pelagos, Pelagos LHD and Pelagos FXD models, which are more designed for specialised dives.

It comes in the one dial colour: a sunray black with a satin finish on the case. That’s different to the typical Pelagos family which features more of a gloss finish.

The iconic “Snowflake” hands are back, and Swiss Super-LumiNova works to light up the white monobloc hour markers.

The new Pelagos 39 still packs in features for divers, with a titanium screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating and waterproof to a depth of 200m/660ft. Under the hood, you find the Manufacture Calibre MT5400 movement. It’s automatic, thin and COSC-certified for perfect time.

The watch isn’t without its differences from the rest of the Pelagos family, however. They aren’t so much drawbacks as they are trade-offs.

The titanium bracelet on the Pelagos 39 differs from the rest of the family, for example. Larger Pelagos models come complete with an auto-adjust bracelet, which automatically changes size under the pressure of ocean depth for more comfortable wear. Both in and out of the water.

The Pelagos 39, however, comes with a quick-adjust T-Fit titanium bracelet, which doesn’t offer the same flexibility. That’s unsurprising, given that the Pelagos 39 is designed to be as at home out of the water than in.

Other differences include no date window on the Pelagos 39 compared to the rest of the family. For that you’ll still need to go for a 42mm model.

Eagle-eyed Pelagos lovers will also see four rows of text in the lower-third of the dial, and a red Pelagos logo.
