AAFW 2022 Day One: Bec & Bridge takes us back to the 00s

Monday, 9 May marked the opening of the second annual Afterpay Australian Fashion Week – and the 26th Australian Fashion Week event.

Last year, in 2021, Afterpay made headlines after it became the new headline sponsor of Australian Fashion Week. The goal for Afterpay was simple – democratise fashion. Make it more inclusive, make it more accessible and make it more sustainable. 2021’s event was just that, with a new look, new group showcases and shows that were accessible to the general public, AAFW opened a historically exclusive space for all to enjoy. After all, fashion is art and art should be for everyone.

This year’s event has been no different. Opening at 8am with a special welcome to country ceremony, the first show at 9am was then Bianca Spender. Expressive, soft but dramatic, Bianca Spender showcased a bright collection with draped silhouettes and form flattering cuts. A brand known for its impeccable tailoring, the collection as a whole was chic and modern. A celebration of femininity, it was shown off by models who sought to channel their inner Coco Rocha.

Up next in a riot of colour, Gary Bigeni’s whimsical attitude to design filled the room with joy. Bold prints and earthy greens were the name of the game in this showcase of both mens and womenswear.

Bondi Born at 12:30pm took us off-site to the overseas passenger terminal, where guests were treated to the brand’s signature elevated resortwear. Pops of fluro were a surprise this year, but as always with the clean lines and understated elegance that makes this brand a household favourite.

And to close day one, it was Bec & Bridge. A designer that only shows every two years, this one was special, the 21st birthday of the label’s inception. Arguably the show with the best soundtrack of the night, models stomped down the runway to ‘Celebrity Skin’ in low rise cuts and belly-baring tops. It was an ode to the fashion of the early 2000s but with an edgy twist.
